Ancient Zilupe valley
Latgale
Listen to the landscape

The ancient Zilupe valley with its characteristic contour, river and lakes is like a miniature of Latgale. It starts at the outskirts of Zilupe town and runs past the Zaļesje manor to Duboviki. The river Grīva flows along the ancient valley, home also to the Zaļesje and Sovāni lakes. There are two Latgalian castle mounds – the Naumki or Šibeņica and the Duboviki. The Naumki castle mound, now overgrown with pine trees and birch trees, was artificially fortified, its ditches and embankments can still be seen at the northern end.

Today, the Zilupe horse-breeding stud is located in the valley, continuing a long-standing tradition. Latvia’s second largest herd lives here and grazes the ancient valley meadows.

  • The oldest name for Zilupe is Sīnuoja, from the Latgalian word sīns – hay.
  • Zilupe is Latvia’s eastern-most town.
  • The Zilupe valley was once home to swamp turtles.
