Mākoņkalns area
Latgale
Listen to the landscape

Mākoņkalns, also known as the Padebešu kalns (both mean Cloud Hill), stands out in the landscape, because it is one of the highest points in Latgale. It is 247.9 metres above sea level and 50 metres above the surrounding landscape. It offers a wide view of Lake Rāzna, wooded hills and the translucent Ubagovs Tarn, popularly known as the clear eye of Latgale.

At the top of the hill are the surviving ruins of the defensive wall of Volkenberg Castle built by the Livonian Order in the 13th century. Volkenberg Castle was one of the first fortifications in Latgale. A steep wooden staircase leads to the castle ruins, and there are a number of hiking tracks.

  • At the foot of Mākoņkalns is a plaque commemorating the visit of Latvia’s President, Kārlis Ulmanis to Latgale in 1938.
