Ludza with lakes and castle ruins
Latgale
Listen to the landscape

Ludza is the oldest town in Latgale and is situated in a picturesque, hilly area. It is surrounded by five lakes –the Lielais and Mazais (Large and Small) Ludza Lakes, Lakes Zvirgzdene, Dūnākla and Runtorta. The beginnings of the town can be traced back to the ancient settlement at the nearby Zvirgzdene Šelupinku Ķīšukalns.

The ruins of the mighty stone castle built by German crusaders in 1399 are magnificently mirrored in the waters of the Lielais and Mazais Ludza Lakes. Ludza’s historic centre, with 19th-century wooden and brick houses and enclosed courtyards, is itself a beautiful architectural monument.

  • Ludza is home to several interesting archaeologically researched monuments – the Odukalns, Ķīšukalns, Nukus and Kivtu burial grounds.
  • The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, also called the white church sits proudly atop Baznīckalns (Church Hill). Adjacent is the Tadeusz Chapel and bell tower. Alongside the chapel stands the 4-metre-high statue of the Queen of Māra’s land, with her hands raised to protect the town.
