Jūrmala with wooden chalets and beach
Riga region

The endless sandy beach, pine forests and hundreds of wooden chalets built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries combine to form Jūrmala’s unique identity. The style of Jūrmala’s architecture is light, elegant and joyful with decorative carvings, romantic towers, wind vanes, verandas and colourful stained-glass windows. Here you can see examples of traditional craftsmanship and the use of neoclassical, art nouveau, national romanticism and functionalism building-component and finishing elements.

  • Kristaps Morbergs’ turquoise neo-gothic villa and the Rainis and Aspazija summer-chalet building complex – home to the eponymous museum – are particularly fine and significant examples of Jūrmala’s wooden architecture.
  • The list of protected architectural monuments includes 408 buildings, of which seven are churches – three Lutheran, two Catholic and two Orthodox.
  • There are 11 well-equipped bathing areas along the 24-kilometre-long Jūrmala beach.
