Jūrkalne seashore bluffs
Kurzeme
Listen to the landscape

The Jūrkalne seashore bluffs are picturesque, with a narrow beach, different from other landscapes on the west coast of Kurzeme – typically smooth sandy beaches or grassy meadows. They are the highest coastal bluffs in Latvia. The bluffs change continuously under the influence of waves and winds. Landslips at Jūrkalne destroy walking paths, the stairway leading from the precipice to the beach has been rebuilt several times. Because of coastline erosion, Jūrkalne loses an average of one metre of land annually.

  • The Jūrkalne bluffs reach as high as 20 metres.
  • The Jūrkalne bluffs were formerly known as Feliksberg or Lucky Hill.
  • After World War II, until the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Jūrkalne beach and stately bluffs marked the Soviet Union’s western border and were only accessible with special permits.
  • The Jūrkalne bluffs are part of the Suiti Cultural Space, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009.
