The Plaviņas HPP reservoir is located between Plaviņas and Aizkraukle. It covers some of the Daugava River’s ancient valleys – dolomite cliffs, rapids and waterfalls are now under water. The hydroelectric plant was completed in 1965. Plaviņas HPP is the largest of Latvia’s three hydroelectric power stations on the Daugava. Although its design is compact in comparison with other power plants, it still stands out like a grey giant in the landscape. The two banks of the Daugava are connected by a road tunnel, the only one in Latvia.
