Cēsis Old Town with medieval castle and park
Vidzeme
Listen to the landscape

Cēsis is one of the most outstanding medieval towns in Latvia. Despite the damage caused by wars and fires, its historical centre has preserved its ancient layout. Visitors can see cobbled streets, plazas and squares, buildings with red tiled roofs. The medieval castle, dating back to the 13th century, has the best preserved castle ruins in Latvia. They are encompassed by one of the most romantic and attractive parks in Vidzeme. The lake, with its mirror reflection of the castle, Riekstu Hill, the broad travertine stairway and open-air stage make up the park’s unique vista.

  • The Cēsis New Mansion, alongside the Livonian Order Castle, houses the Cēsis History and Art Museum.
  • The museum hosts medieval festivals and has a medieval castle garden, where vegetables, herbs and medicinal plants are grown using traditional methods.
