Aglona Basilica

Listen to the landscape

The Aglona Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven Roman Catholic Basilica is an important centre of Catholicism and a holy site. The white church was constructed between 1768 and 1780 as a dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is surrounded by a plaza for the reception of pilgrims which features Stations of the Way of the Cross. The Aglona Basilica was built in the late Baroque style and several 18th and 19th century interior features – the chancery, organ, confessional, pews and side altars – have been preserved. It is believed that the Our Miraculous Lady of Aglona icon has healing abilities. It is only uncovered on celebratory occasions – during religious festivals.

  • In 1980, Pope John Paul II granted the Aglona Church the title Basilica minoris, a privileged designation within the Catholic Church.
  • Thousands of votas, or small silver plaques in the form of hands, legs, hearts, etc. have been placed under the Our Lady of Aglona icon. They are tokens of gratitude to Aglona’s Mother of God for answering prayers, helping in recovery from illness and difficult life situations.
