Abava river valley from the Sabile Wine Hill
Kurzeme
Listen to the landscape

The view from the Sabile Wine Hill takes in vine-covered slopes and the beautiful Abava river valley. The town’s historic buildings are a monument to 15th-19th century urban construction. Building was limited by the terrain, so the houses and gardens are located in a narrow strip between the Abava and the steep slope of the ancient river valley, the buildings are close together and form a densely packed townscape. The town can be viewed from the Sabile castle mound, more than 20 metres high, but the Wine Hill, 34 metres above the town, provides an even wider view.

  • During the reign of Duke Jacob, in the mid-17th century, Sabile’s dry wine was very popular not only in the Duchy court, but also in other European countries it was exported to.
  • About 30 different varieties of grape are grown in the vineyard. Peaches, apricots and walnuts are also grown on the wine hill.
  • The Sabile vineyard is the furthest north in the world, and the city’s coat of arms features a bunch of purple grapes.
