Rīga’s Brāļu kapi – Brothers’ Cemetery
Riga region
Listen to the landscape

The Memorial Ensemble of the Brothers’ Cemetery in Rīga is dedicated to the soldiers who died in the First World War and Latvia’s War of Independence. The ensemble is composed as a symbolic memorial path. Two Mourning Horsemen rear above the entrance gate through which visitors enter the Pārdomu ceļš (Path of Reflection) whose avenue of lindens represents the mothers, wives and sisters waiting and suffering in silence. Beyond the avenue, the Sacred altar of fire and oak grove of the Varoņu terase (Heroes’ Terrace) symbolise the union of eternal fire and the strength of man. The Altar’s wall divides our world from the kingdom of the deceased – an extensive graveyard – over which Mother Latvia looms, in gratitude and sadness.

  • The construction of the Rīga Brothers Cemetery took 21 years. The memorial ensemble was consecrated on Lāčplēsis Day, 11 November 1936.
  • The architectural design of the ensemble was led by professor and academician Pēteris Feders, the sculptures based on ideas of Kārlis Zāle and the landscaping designed by Rīga Gardens’ director Andrejs Zeidaka.
  • Some 3 000 heroes are buried in the Brothers’ Cemetery, including around 300 unknown soldiers.
  • The urn under Mother of Latvia contains 517 fistfuls of earth, one from each of Latvia’s parishes.
