The Great Ķemeri tīrelis (Bog) is part of the Ķemeri National Park. It is a raised moss bog, one of the largest bogs of this type in Latvia. The landscape is dotted with century-old stunted pines, bright blue lakes and pools. The bog is home to various rare species of sphagnums, as well as the round-leaved sundew. It is also the second most-important nesting site of wood sandpipers in Latvia. In the spring and autumn, migrating cranes call to each other and thousands of geese take a well-earned rest. The bog’s colours change with the seasons: in spring, white cottongrass protrudes, the purple of heather takes over in late summer; in the autumn the bog shimmers in warm and saturated colours, but in winter, all is snow-covered white. In the rays of the morning and evening sun, the bog landscape glistens in shades of gold.
