Kuldīga Old Town and the Venta Rumba
Kurzeme
Listen to the landscape

The ancient buildings and natural surroundings in Kuldīga Old Town form a beautiful ensemble. The distinctive terrain and dolomite outcrops that make up the sloping shores of the Alekšupīte and Venta rivers not only influence the town’s layout, but also give it a special magic. This romantic small-town ambience is complemented by numerous small bridges and the babbling of the rivers. Unique 17th and 18th century small-town buildings have survived on the banks of Alekšupīte. Later architectural styles can be viewed on Liepāja iela, which is enfolded by buildings of different periods with extraordinary doors and fanlights specific to Kuldiga. The distinctive brick bridge over the Venta is an outstanding architectural monument.

  • The red-brick bridge was built to 19th-century standards, allowing carriages to pass each other.
  • The width of the Venta Rumba (waterfall) varies depending on the time of year and the volume of water in the river. In dry periods, its width can be as little as 100 metres, while in spring and autumn it can extend to 270 metres.
  • Some 30 films have been shot in Kuldīga and its vicinity.
